Princess Week: Nab Kate's Style

As if Dress #1 wasn't already amazing enough, Dress #2 is just a stellar (yes, you just must click the link...totally have to see it)!  Some time after The Royal Kiss, the Duchess of Cambridge changed in to a less formal, but equally as stunning, gown.  We'd argue that her second dress would make a perfect wedding gown for us non-royals.

To get Kate's great style, try this gown from Sottero and Midgley.  It can be ordered with the bolero...or you could purchase an cropped cardigan of your own.  Don't you think pink or champagne colored would be nice?

Princess Week: A Reflection on The Royal Wedding Dress

Wow! What an AMAZING wedding!  The nuptials of William and Kate were beautiful and romantic.  It was all just the way you'd expect a royal wedding to be.

And finally - FINALLY - after months of secrecy, Kate's dress maker was revealed as Sarah Burton from the design house of Alexander McQueen.  There has been much speculation over why she actually chose Alexander McQueen as her designer.  Of course, there's the official blurb, but my personal guess is that Kate is much like many of us: she appreciates fashion.  It is well known that the late Alexander McQueen was famous for his over the top style.  But he also had a way of creating pieces that were objects of art.  Sarah Burton, who took over for McQueen after his death, understands that concept and indeed, with the help of Kate, created a masterpiece.

Undoubtedly Kate Middleton's dress will be the one that brides will aspire to for many seasons to come.  I don't doubt that the Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 dress collections will feature gowns much like Kate's.  Kate may have just heralded in a new era of *gasp* SLEEVES!

What I have always loved about Kate's style is that it is classic with a twist.  Once she was engaged, you never saw Kate wearing something inappropriate (as some other royals have been known to do) - but she never looked stuffy or dowdy either.  She always looked appropriate for her youthful age and her important position.

Her wedding gown was no exception.  For such an incredible event, I'm sure she and Ms. Burton knew that this dress would have to be a pièce de résistance.  Not only would it be making a statement about the house of Alexander McQueen, it would be making a statement about The Royal Family, and, indeed, about Kate herself.  We all knew that modesty in the design of the dress would be a given.  She was having a royal wedding at Westminster Abbey after all; you'd never see a royal bride without sleeves.  But I love how Kate pushed the rules about as far as she could push them.  Although her arms were fully covered in fabric, the sheerness of the lace still left them romantically bare.  And that plunging neckline!  She couldn't have gone any lower - but it never seemed out of place or out of line.  The cut of the neckline didn't leave her exposed and the high collar kept the whole thing looking very regal.

Most brides who have worn a corseted style gown will tell you just how much it flattered them on their wedding day.  Kate was no exception.  The Victorian corsetry, a hallmark of McQueen style, kept her looking svelte and sexy - something much needed when you're dealing with such a full skirted gown.

Rather than the circle, ball gown style skirt we're used to seeing on princesses, Kate's gown was more of a wide A-line with pleating that gave the satin skirt movement.  With every step, her dress swirled about her.  It's that kind of movement that many brides are looking for in their gowns.  They want to swirl about in their masterpiece of a dress, showing the world how much they are in love.  And there was no doubt: love was written all over Kate's face.

And then there were the details...details that only the bride would appreciate - like lace shaped to look like royal family symbols...earrings to mimic her family's crest...the Cartier tiara that was her "something borrowed" from her mother in law, The Queen...they all played together to make her fashion statement.  And yet, never forgetting that she was first Kate, wife and royal second, she kept it authentic by doing her own makeup - and she looked amazing.

All my best wishes go out to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  I hope they enjoy many, many years of wedded bliss.

Best Wedding Wishes,

White for bridesmaids? Why not?

After watching Princess Kate’s sister and maid of honor, Pippa, saunter down the aisle in a white, cowl necked, form fitting gown, we had to ask: Is white okay for bridesmaids?

It’s always been a rule of etiquette that no one other than the bride should wear white to the wedding for fear that one might upstage the bride. But in a situation where the wedding gown is so obviously the dramatic focal point, would it really hurt for the bridesmaids to be dressed in white as well?

We say, “Why not?” White is a classic neutral that could add an air of lightness to your wedding palette. Colored bouquets and/or shoes will keep your pictures from looking like you lined up ghosts to be in your wedding party. White dresses – even white tuxedos – are like a blank canvas. Without colored dresses to compete with, you can really have some fun with loud, bright colors, like bright purple, hot pink, even neon shades of green.

So, don’t be afraid of letting someone else wear white…you may just find it to be the perfect backdrop to your big day.

Princess Week: Princess Peach

Will Mario ever win the heart of the beautiful and adventurous Princess Peach (AKA Princess Toadstool)?  Yep, you know her from the numerous Super Mario Bros. games from the Nintendo gaming systems.  While she has a knack for getting kidnapped, she's a wily woman, often using her gifts and talents to protect her friends and save her kingdom.  Princess Peach is definitely a girly girl, but she knows how to hang with the boys.  While she obviously enjoys the finer things (look at the sapphires and rubies she rocks daily - and her spectacular red shoes!), she's not afraid to take a risk either or do things that are outside of the box.
That's why I think if Princess Peach ever settles down with Mario, she'd be estatic to wear this blush pink number by Kitty Chen Couture.  It's full, A-line style keeps it princess-y enough for a royal wedding, but it's unique details keep it edgy - just like Princess Peach.  The feathered skirt and unique color are something I think Princess Peach would appreciate, and the sparkly belt would indulge her love of bling.

What do you think?  Would Princess Peach rock this gown?

Princess Week: Cinderella

She may be fictional, but she is probably one of the best known and most loved princesses in all of history.  Cinderella tells the story of a down and out girl who wins the heart of the dashing and handsome Prince Charming.  Although she thinks she's just a common girl, her fairy godmother know she deserves a dress that shows off her inner beauty.

In the Disney version of the story, Cinderella ends up getting married in a white, chiffon-looking, ball gown, complete with poofy sleeves and bustles.  But in 2011, who wears that dated stuff anymore?  If Cindy (if we may be so informal) were getting married today, she'd undoubtedly go for a ball gown more like this one from Moonlight Bridal's Stephanie Collection.  It retains all the elements you'd want to see in the gown of a princess, but updates it with a sleeveless neckline and adds just the right amount of sparkle (something missing from the Princess' original dress) to set off those one-of-a-kind glass slippers.

Don't you think Cinderella would look amazing in a gown like this?

Princess Week: Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco

As a model, actress, and princess, Grace Kelly – who became Princess Grace of Monaco - undoubtedly lived a charmed life. She reigned alongside her husband from 1956 until her tragic death in 1982. Although Her Serene Highness (as she was titled) was known to be as gracious as her name would suggest, she was also rumored to have something of a wild side. I imagine that if she was getting married today, Grace Kelly would want a gown that showed off both sides of her personality.

This amazing ball gown from Justin Alexander’s Signature collection achieves both the serious and playful sides of a woman like Grace Kelly. The dress features a removable, lace, reverse bolero with full sleeves and a high neck. The romantic modesty would appease both her Catholic family and his royal family as she walked down the aisle for their church ceremony.

After the world had watched what had become known as “The Wedding of The Century”, Grace could let loose and enjoy a private reception by removing the lace top to reveal a stunning and sexy, strapless bodice. With or without the lace bolero, the dress would be stunning. The full, ball skirt is exactly what a princess of her nature would wear.

What do you think? Does the gown do Princess Grace justice?

It's Princess Week!

If you haven’t noticed, Royal Wedding madness is everywhere! One of the biggest weddings of our generation is coming up in just a few days and we thought we’d join in the celebration. In honor of Prince William and the soon-to-be Princess Kate’s upcoming nuptials, we’re declaring it Princess Week!

As we all count down the days until the Royal Wedding, we’ll be taking a look back at some of history’s most famous women in royalty and the dresses they might have worn if they were getting married today. Once Kate becomes Princess Catherine, we’ll show you some hot gowns that could have you looking as amazing as the most fashionable Kate!

First up, Nefertiti…

Nefertiti and the PURE by Justin Alexander dress she'd wear.
Thought to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, Nefertiti reigned alongside the Pharaoh of Egypt from about 1353 B.C. until 1330 B.C. With those warm, desert temperatures, an Egyptian bride might desire a light, flowing fabric, like the organic silk in this PURE by Justin Alexander dress. Nefertiti would undoubtedly appreciate the lovely beaded bateau neckline on this gown. I imagine that she’d accessorize with a similarly beaded and ornate crown.

We know Nefertiti would love this dress; what do you think?

Thank You Thursday: Carol

Hello Hello!  Welcome to another edition of Thank You Thursday!

In a wedding, we know it's all about the bride.  Because if the bride ain't happy...ain't no one happy.  But lest we get so wrapped up in the beautiful bride, we though we should take a minute to acknowledge a fabulous mother who thought we were fabulous too:
Dear Suzanne,

I wanted to thank you very much for all your help. My "mother of the groom" gown came out beautifully, it fit perfectly because of your expert and patient alterations. The drive from Tucson was worth all the time in the car and the fitting trips.

I cannot express how thankful I was to find my way to your store. Your staff was very helpful and steered me toward a dress they knew would be good for me. After losing 80 pounds this year I really wanted a dress to help me celebrate my accomplishment and also to look elegant and age appropriate (without being frumpy) for my son's wedding.

I never felt more pretty and I got so many enthusiastic compliments on the gown. I highly recommend that you keep that dress in the store - it was the Moonlight Celebrations by Val Stefani, MB7096 in charcoal. It is deceiving in the catalog pictures and online - it really it quite stunning on. I will send a photo as soon as the photographer makes them available.

The gown Cindy wore - which, as she states, is really amazing in person.

Thanks again, I hope someday I get a chance to buy another gown from you or have a custom gown created. You are truly a gifted seamstress. Wishing you much continued success in your business.
Best Regards,
Cindy Bogle
Cindy - THANK YOU! It was a pleasure to have you in the boutique!  We hope that your son is happy for many, many years to come.  We'll try to keep the Val Stefani gown in stock for as long as we can - but after a Thank You like that, it might be a hard thing to do. LOL! We can't wait to see the pix of you in the gown.

Cindy, also thanks for reminding everyone that we cater to brides and their families from all over the state...the country...and sometimes the world!  If you're traveling from Tucson, Flagstaff, Canada, the Bahamas, or anywhere else, we can still help you look your best for your big day.  Just ask!

Keep the awesome thank yous coming.  We heart you!  (send your Thank You to sbbmktg@aol.com)
